Should I just buy another D35 and rebuild it myself or get mine fixed by a mechanic? I dont want the jeep in pieces in my garage for another 2 weeks lol.

I *think* the kit was between 200-300, less if ordered from USA
(check ebay)

the spare D35 I as given the fella said he thought one axle was worn, so its probably a common problem too, so buying a high mileage rearend unit may be a risk, depending on price

Unfortuntely, I suspect a rebuild would run 700-1000 from a pro (ring them)

in my case, I dont know what he did, other than the vehicle was on a hoist and we took centre out, it took a while cause the 8mm locking bolt was snapped in half !!...but he did show me several other centres, and that the big side bearings were all worn

my D35 has a leak between the pumpkin & axle tube, which I am going to have another go at fixing, with Devcon this time.

If you have rebuilt a diff before, its not hard, but getting the settings right and crushing the pinion sleeve, you must know what to do

Okay so the kits the cheap bit. Got it. My diff should have about 140k on it so not heaps it's just bloody sat for years... I'll give some joints a call. Would a jeep joint like beepers jeepers do this kinda stuff or would I be best in seeking a differential repair joint?

So common theme here is wear on bearings in all D35's. Got it. Will get it sorted quick smart as it's the only thing wrong with my jeep now... Everything else is pretty good 'touch wood' for the moment lol...

Ive never touched a diff before this car, Ido have a mate that does this stuff on the usual for cashies... I will speak to him and potentially get him to do it if my persuasion skills are good enough

Reason i suggest popping the cover and pulling the axles before ordering parts is a quick inspection will help determine if a simple rebuild and just the parts you need is best or if you are better getting another.
Sometimes its just axle bearings, other times the shafts can be worn (in which case I'd look for another).
However bearings don't usually cause a knocking noise as initially reported.
I've seen shims dislodge allowing the LSD carrier to move. I've seen clutch packs break. I've seen broken gears etc all of these things can cause knocking.
If its just bearings and seals inc pinion then its cheap and easy.
If its axles or internal gears etc I'd look for a cheap replacement assembly.

I had a quote over the phone from Poly 4x4 to rebuild the D35 in my old 96 Limited with 240000km. All seals were leaking and there was wheel bearing noise. all up was gonna be between $2000 and $2400 depending on if it needed axles or not. I ended up luckily finding a whole car (94 limited) with a rebuilt diff (by Poly 4x4) for $750 and just swapped the diffs over. Brian at Jeepers wont do the diff rebuild but he might be able to supply a low km used one.

Awesome, cheers for that Dave! Ive had a chat to my mate and he may be interested in giving me a hand. Has a press and is good with his hands... Builds racecars and the like so knows his way around a car. If I get a seal and bearing kit I'm sure he'd help..

Cheers mate. Appreciate it. I'll have a chat to my mate and see what he reckons, will have a look soon... It's only just started getting noisy. Put fresh oil in it the other week as it was noisy before this... Leaking bad now.

Anywhere in Aus sell the master bearing and Seal kit + wheel bearing kit?
