It was the V8 Chris - it has air intake behind passenger side headlight while ours is behind drivers side.

Hmmm.... any difference which side it's on in your opinion? I've not closely looked at the V8's underpinnings. Did they say what died.... the message wasn't specific. Did it die of water injestion or electrical failure due to drowning the ignition amp or something?

Chris

Chris they were extremely severe with their comments - the water went inside the motor as Ben stated - definitely not an electrical problem.

Which side makes no difference unless you are incredibly accurate with your creek crossings and keep the appropriate side higher than the other.

The v8 intake appears to be mirror reverse of ours.

All the more reason to throw money at a one (or two) -off solution. I'm really going to start investigating what's under the RHS front guard, and if there's room, I'll be getting a good coach builder to design a neat and tidy exit point through the bodywork for a black stainless (or aluminium) 3" tube to exit at that point and go up the driver's a-pillar over the glass and be anchored near the leading edge of the RHS roof rail. From inside the guard it is a relatively simple job for a flexible pipe to be routed through to the airbox on through a new hole and adapter. A standard Safari ram header would sit on top so that water injested from heavy rain (whilst in motion) could drain off around the sides before heading down the tube.

Wish me luck
Chris

I had a quick look under the bonnet some time back - saw a few technical looking components mounted near the inner guard - they will interfere with any outlet through the guards - could be why no-ones bothered to do anything thus far.

I like your idea - I don't think I'm going to like the $$$$$$$$

Chris, can you copy your above post into the "snorkel" chapter for easy reference. Then I'll put this reply in there too.

Thanks

The suction of the motor at revs will pull water through the air filter so fast you wont have time to hear the bang. With the V8 the intake at front of the air box is round. get some streachy round ducting, tie it on the air box then thread it to the back of the motor to the highest point. A cheap snorkel if you dont go near water much. easy to put in place and easy to take out.

Agreed - a great temp solution. I've done that before... and it stayed there for the next 6 months!!!! It's just a bit hard on the CRD because there is very little room in between the airbox and bonnet from where the airbox is... back.

I'll have another butchers at it to see if I can go with that for the High COuntry trip though...

Cheers
Chris
