as mentioned, the evap can is part of the fuel system.
It allows the tank to vent vapour, the charcoal inside the evap can then allows the vapour to consense into liquid and move back to the tank. The charcoal also removes everything out of the air, thus the vapour no longer exists, to the vented air (under slight pressure) doesnt have that awesome petrol smell that any 60/70s car has on a warm day.
