I have never these, or any other brake controllers, but could something like this work:

Not sure the RF ones are legal in Aus, never seen them for sale any where.

Had a Redarc Towpro fitted to mine recently. The 'box' is hidden away behind the dashboard (or presumably could be anywhere else in the vehicle), and the only visible part is a small button/knob installed in the dashboard near drivers left knee. I was pretty happy when the towbar guy suggested this unit.

(Apologies for the sideways pic - the image hosting site keeps turning pics sideways when I upload...)

+1 for the TowPro, you can also mount the 'box' in any direction; so long as it is firmly mounted.
The P3 on the other hand, HAS to be mounted longitudinally, AND you should be able to see it AND be able to operate the lever on its underside.

+1 for figure 8 cable and connecting into the lights; much better then mucking about with the pedal.

While you've got the interior out of it you can run the 6B&S to an Anderson connector at the rear.

Is the TowPro proportional though? When towing something of a fair weight something proportional like a Tekonsha provides more effective and safer braking.

Yes the TowPro is proportional unlike most other remote units. We have fitted a few and they are a great bit of kit

Should add that they are 'now'. My father had one fitted a few years ago and ripped it out for that exact reason.

I already had a P3 so reusing it. Have fabbed up some alloy wings for it and when required the change drawer in front of the right knee gets popped out revealling velcro tabs behind it for quick and unobtrusive mounting. Will throw some pics up tonight as the paint on the brackets should be dry by then.
