Some feedback on the way the JK performed as a tourer... excellently
We did 5000Km between Yass and returning home around Tasmania. The Rhino Rack worked perfectly and is less noisy at speed than the Windcheetah unit that I had on the Disco.

The Jeep really performed well on the tracks, negotiating the Ring River track with ease while the Prado and Troopie that accompanied us both needed recovery and the Prado broke a CV.

We did notice that Tasmanian fuel is crap with the motor pinging its head off up long hills in 5th gear. a couple of times we needed half a tank of 95 octane to fix it. On the way up the Hume on the way home no problems at all with mainland 91 octane. Fuel economy was around the 14.5 - 15 l/100Km indicated on the dash.

The one track that stopped us was the sawback range track. About 3Km in we came across the hole below and I needed a tug backward because the diff was stuck on the high section of the road. We could have made it further by winching but I'm a believer in winching out of trouble, not into it

All up the Wrangler performed faultlessly although it was a bit tight with two adults and two kids.

Tote

It's good to hear that all went well.

I know what you mean about Tassie fuel. The last time I was down there I took my modified Ford XR6 Turbo. Due to its tune, I had to add booster every time I filled up. Ended up costing me a fortune but the great driving roads down there more than made up for it.

I don't know why people bitch about the JK as a tourer. That's how I've set up mine and had no problems towing the camper trailer 6.5 hours from Newcastle to Tumut during the new year. She just doesn't go up hills very quickly that's all.

Toured here, there and everywhere in my JKU towing a trailer or 14 foot pop top over bitumen, desert, sand, rough roads and tracks and loaded to the hilt and no trouble so far (about 120000kms rough and 50000 bitumen).

My only complaint is the small fuel tank but it's nothing that a long ranger can't fix.
