Fairly simple way top determine where "noises" are coming from. Cut a length of common (and garden) type hose and de-burr the edges on one end. This is the end that goes into your ear 'ole.
Poke the other end into the motor and nether regions until the noise gets REALLY loud. That's probably where the noise/problem is.
Beats guessing every time....just be careful where and how u poke it....with rotating/moving objects in the engine

hmmm,, yeah I don't really know,

its going to have to be a process of elimination. I'll replace the noisey pulleys first (the cheapest start i'm sure) and we'll go from there. I'll keep you updated

Well when all else fails, and you get differing opinions the only thing to do is do it yourself.

I think I've narrowed down the noise.

I took the serpentine belt completely off -- started in up = no whirring noise. You little beauty.

Played with all the pulleys = idler is noisey, big deal. Water pump is fine.

Its the Air Con pulley making all the noise i reckon, Can anyone tell me more about these. Can I just replace the pulley?? cost??

anyway after a bit more time of swearing and cursing i got the belt back on and started in up == noise has gone, what the?

anyway took it for a drive around the block, alternator light came on, and eventually when i pulled up the noise came back.

hopefully the only reason the light is on cos i did tigthen the belt enough?? anyone got any other suggestions?

anyway for 2 minutes the sound of the XJ was bliss, I could hear the engine.

anyway just another chapter in the story.

stay tuned!!

the pulley bearing on the end of the aircon compressor rotates around the shaft its suppose to be fixed to. Got mine fixed at an aircon place by a little asian bloke who imports non-genuine jeep AC parts. You can do it without draining the AC gas too. Not terribly difficult or expensive (for a Jeep !!!)

The pully on the A/C acts as a idler when the A/C is not being used .When you switch the A/C on it activates the A/C clutch with electro magnets in the pully that cause the clutch to be pulled against it. As the clutch is keyed/locked on to the A/C shaft it then rotates with the pully Remove the clutch plate assembly and you should see a circlip that retains the pully remove the circlip and the pully should slide off the compresser housing extension thet surrounds the shaft once removed replace the bearings A part number is usually stamped on the bearing but take it with you to CBC or any bearing supplier they aren't usually that dear You should not have to disconnect any A/C hoses you will prob have to take out the mounting bolts and swing the compressor up to make it easy to work on
Best of luck
