I think some need to have a close look at how the fan clutch works.
Get hold of an old one & pull it to bits.
You will find that the thermostat spring turns a valve that uses oil to control the amount of slip. the hotter, the less slip. As far as all these descriptions of cooling & heating cycles is fiction.
With regard to the use of newspaper in the fan, you will find this is a standard method that has been used as long as there has been fan clutches. I first was shown this method over 40 years ago. Before some who choose to chastise the practice were born !!!
You can research on the internet all you like & for as long as you like but if you dont have the basic mechanical understanding you are no more than an internet jockey.
The suggestion of run on is a good one. If it keeps spinning when hot & turned off, you have a problem.

Another test is at start up when cold, the engine fan will operate in a locked up mode for about 30 secs or so until the fluid is dispersed to the correct chamber again. It will be a lot noisier than at idle when hot. After this time you will hear the fan slow down again.

Big thing I noticed when I renewed my fan clutch was the noise, it's almost noisier than the engine now

This thread just diagnosed my overheating probs. Nothing serious, yet thank god. But after reading this I've noticed no roar from the fan anymore. Time for a cooling system service. Long overdue anyhow.

Thats how I found out that my initial replacement fan clutch was the HD grand Cherokee one they had sent me.
Carvesdodo has sent me an excellent piece of info regarding HD vs extreme duty vs normal duty fan clutch operation and application. Explains why the 'roar' increases sometimes more than the effective cooling by the fan.

Wow guys thanks for all the replies. I had researched and came across most of the ideas suggested. This morning when it was cold, I was able to turn the fan a lot more than 5 revolutions, so I am assuming its buggered. Can I ask A few questions?

My car is a 96 petrol, is there any special fan clutch replacement I should be looking at or can someone recommend one they have used? From what I can see they look to be around the $100 mark on ebay, does that sound correct? Is there a heavy duty one you can get?

The other question would be does anyone have a link to the whole process? like a write up or do it yourself tutorial? Is it a tough job? I had a look on go jeeps site which is a treasure trove of info, but found nothing on this

The car is old and so is the whole cooling system. When I first got it, It only overheated on hot days when with extensive soft sand work. On the road, it has never gone any where near halfway. Since then I learnt to drop the tyres more and use low range more. that helped heaps but still on some occasions I had to crank the blasted heater. Replaced the thermostat, and wired the factory thermo to a manual override switch. Also removed the aircon condenser because it had no air con anyway, so that provided more airflow. Lastly I added 2 10 inch thermos in the air con condensers place. With all that, I have never had a problem since. Then last weekend, I noticed it was quite hot on a drive back from a camp trip, so much so I was running 1 thermo, and at times the heater just to keep it away from 3 quarters. The radiator is looking quite old and worse for wear, but before the fan clutch, seemed to be doing its job. I am pondering replacing it if and when I do the fan clutch, as I am guessing its going to be a lot easier to do it with the radiator removed.

Thanks heaps for all the info, top forum.
