Even better if you get the version with two sensors as you keep an eye on the temp of other stuff as well.

... or one of these - if the price is acceptable to you ... http://welltempered.weebly.com/index.html

If you have an OBDII 1997+ XJ ... then you can also just use an OBD reader like a ScanGauge ... but it does use the same sensor as the factory dash gauge.

Thats not an issue tho - as its the factory dash gauge that is deliberately vague - not the sensor .. unless its faulty.
Both those systems look pretty good. No price listed on the "WellTempered". I have no idea if my jeep is OBDII, how do I find out?

Why do you say "deliberately vague" carves?

You need to ring or e-mail him .... They are a bit dear ... but divide the price by the number of gauges it functions as ... and its more acceptable.

Whats your Year model ?? .... 97 and onwards, update XJs have a little, wedge shaped electrical socket, under the dvrs side dash - to plug an OBDII reader/dealer diagnostics, straight into.

A digital temp gauge is constantly changing when you watch it ... As it should ... You just have to get used to what its telling you.

Mine normally fluctuates a coupla degrees depending on weather, engine load etc ... e.g. No towing, highway speeds in 36* weather = 92*/95* with 93* being displayed the most.

Some XJs with a radiator not working too well, or a fanclutch not working too well .... or just being pushed too hard/too long in hot weather ... will be displaying temps from probably 95* - 115*.

The factory dash gauge dampens the display/reduces the accuracy - so people dont get all excited about the needle bouncing around ...

When the needle is in the midpoint "normal" range ... the coolant temp may actually be 110* ... Other brands hide the real temps as well ...

.... and the first you know about a problem that might have been happening/building up for miles ... is when the needle jumps into the red.

I use the 'Torque' app on my Andoid phone to monitor things with a OBD2 blutooth trasnmitter. It also allows you setup alarms for various parameters such as coolant temp.

I've found that when the factory needle is dead centre (on apparently 100 degrees), according to the Torque app it actually is exactly 100 degrees. However its when the needle travels up or down below here that the factory needle is 'deliberately vague' and inaccurate (like all manufactures).

An interesting point to mention is that the highest temp I've ever seen using the Torque app was 125 degrees (37 degree day in soft sand with BOTH of my thermo fans playing up...) and the factory temp guage hadn't reached the red yet... It was about 3/4's the way up. Makes me wonder how hot must it get before the needle does reach red, or how long does it take for the needle to 'vaguely' move up to the red..?

Interesting I was noticing that mine was getting quite a bit warmer on the guage than usual over the past two days while it was being worked hard. Might be time to invest in something to check for sure.
