Definately crawl before you walk. I have had my TJ for almost two years now WITHOUT A LIFT and i've been to Fraser/Ormeau/LCMP and all the rest without worry. $1000 is a lot of money for something i was never going to appreciate in the first 12 months of jeep ownership. I suggest that all new TJ owners drive their jeep stock for at least months or more to get full appreciation of what they think (not the forum/other jeep users) is going to be worthwhile uprades.
I suggest you do what i did -
1) Get a towbar or a jbitz.com.au rear bar. This is an excellent recovery point.
2) go to arb and get 2x front recovery hooks installed for about $100 - or do it yourself
3) Get some sidesteps. I cannot enforce this enough. I have only just put sidesteps on my tj and i wish i had done it when i first bought the jeep. The front tyres WILL flick a lot of stones up on to your rear flares and cause damage to them. Trust me, sidesteps should be standard on TJ's to prevent this damage as my rear flares are terribly damaged to the point that they feel like coarse sandpaper & paint is peeling on the front side.
4) pull the splashguards and fit a set of driving lights (or put them on your arb bar - nice choice) I run a pair of Narva Targa 200's. Big, bright, bold and only $89 each from AutoPro they are just as bright as $300+ lights
5) Fit some 31x10.5 R15 All terrain tyres - better yet, buy a second set of rims and have a spare set of tyres.
6) Go to the beach and do some donuts with the 28" GSA's. THEY ARE AWESOME FOR CIRCLE WORK! The 31's slow things down too much...
Cheers!
