NOVAK is your best option for the adapters and kits you will require.
I have a complete running small block Chevvy and turbo 400 left over from my CJ project you can have cheap. It all works but the transfer case is shot.

It can be done !!!!! and with a flat belly up as well

slighly offset the motor to the left side and clock the transfer case up, most of the adapters have this option anyway

with a chev you can also push the motor forward a bit to give some drive shaft length

Mines got a 700 init been in there close to 10 years havent had a problem with it ...the rear shaft has a cardin joint and i get no vibrations....really like the 4 gears with the lock up converter and the lower 1st gear...am happy to take photos if ya want ...yep novaks the go...wayne from jeepford did the conversion...the only thing i hate is that i am running a B&M shifter to suit the 4 speed auto i hate the ugly horrible to use thing ...would love the original shifter again i have heard that you can convert the original shifters to suit the 4 speed so might give it ago...cheers mick

Yeah I second the chev and t700 working, thats what mine has and I think its great. The T700 is easy on the drive train and no vibrations on mine using a double cardon joint rear tail shaft, it sits at 120km on freeway fine. The front tail shaft is thin solid tube style so no clearance issue and you do off-set the engine and transmission.
Advanced adapters for the adapter plate which will come with a dana 300 input shaft to suit t700, you will also need the shorter t700 output shaft to suit 4x4 (get one off ebay $25+postage) you will need a shop to swap them in and you can do the rest like I did myself.
I had a t400 in mine first and hated going for a highway drive, damm thing would be reving its tits off at just over 3grand now 2 grand purring along with out even using the lock up convertor on the t700.
I am sure many blokes on here have different setups but for my 2 cents the chev and T700 combo goes great, shift kit the t700 to really enjoy it.

Thank you for all who provided comment. Just don't know which way to go either 4bt Cummins or the sweet sound of the Chevy 350.

I wouldnt go a Turbo 350, I have one in my HG Premier, and with 540hp and 3.7 gears, the 3 speed is terrible on the highway, and would be the same in the Jeep. Although a turbo 700 is weaker, it does have the 4th gear. You can also go a overdrive kit for a turbo350 but again, you prob dont have the room for it.

Default Need assistance on CJ project

I ran a Holden v8 and turbo 700 in my old cj7 with 4.5" lift
Using a jb conversions adaptor it was the shortest one on the market
Also clocked the transfer case Up
And ran a flat belly pan
You will need to run a double cardenal
Rear shaft and a late model cj 7 front
Shaft they are a good box and use a lock up converter
Much better on fuel than a 3 speed box
Also run a large trans cooler ( the bigger the better)
That car was my daily drive for 8 yrs
