I posted this information and questions in a fuel filter thread yesterday by mistake.

It is more relevant here though.

Ryco list the R2737P as a filter for the 06/11 on 3.0 Litre Turbo Diesel anyone tried one??

Have ordered a couple from Bursons @ $22.00 each will see if it is a direct replacement.

The Genuine Mopar 68109834AA is $65.00 from my dealer. (Made in China) looks like it should be about $10.00 just a replacable cartridge no spin on body. What a great example of price gouging

It is all a bit like their Chrysler approved Oil MS-11106 funny when Chrsyler do not even manufacture the engine.

Planning to change my oil and filter at 5K on my new JGC so far trouble free except the cruise control switches itself off. Is there a TSB for this ???

(have since found that TSB 18-019-14 corrects this problem only released on the 18th March 14)

My dealer uses Castrol Diesel oil not the MS-11106 approved oil the only equivalent I can find is the Mobil 1 ESP and I have a dislike for Mobil oils anyway. Is there any other alternative oils. It is also strange that the US have 16K oil change intervals. Have 4900ks and the oil life is showing 78% looks like it would go that US interval easily in my driving conditions.

What is the MS-11106 oil specification anyway?

I wonder what VM Motori specify???

Just checked that Fuchs TITAN GT1 PRO FLEX 5W-30 it does not state that it is fully synthetic or meets the MS-11106 standard not that I give a lot of credence to Chrysler's standard. This statement on the Fuchs site also worried me "TITAN GT1 PRO FLEX 5W-30 may only be used in diesel engines when also low sulphur diesel fuel is being used."

Just found this in the US Vehicle Diesel Supplement manual. It is worth a read lots of additional info on the diesel engine.

"For best performance and maximum protection under all
types of operating conditions, the manufacturer recommends
engine oils that meet the requirements of Chrysler
Material Standard MS-11106, and that are approved to
Fiat 9.55535-S1 or Fiat 9.55535-S3 and ACEA C3"

I will take more notice of the Fiat specs

Fiat 9.55535-S1
Qualification for Diesel and gasoline engine, with exhaust treatment system, lubricants, granting fuel economy and extended drain. OEM recommended product is also approved to ACEA C2.
Fiat 9.55535-S2
Qualification for Diesel and gasoline engine, with exhaust treatment system, lubricants, with extended drain. OEM recommended product also meets: ACEA C3-04, MB 229.51 and API: SM/CF.

There are a number of oils around that meet a similar spec but I am pedantic about using an oil that states it has the Chrysler approval.

Hi John,

Thommo states that the Fuchs Oil (what a name for a brand label ) has approval MB229.51, and thats Mercedes Benz, and the WH Grand uses the MB 3.0 TD.

I use Nulon 5W-30 Diesel Formula simply because it is readily available.
It complies with ACEA C3-08, MB 229.51 and has a low SAPS (Sulphated-Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur content) "suitable for use with diesel particulate filters".

Jeep states "Engine Oil Selection - Diesel Engines
For best performance and maximum protection for all
engines under all types of operating conditions, the
manufacturer recommends engine oils that are API Certified
and meet the requirements of DaimlerChrysler
Material Standard MS-11106 or Mercedes Benz MB 229.51
and ACEA C3 qualified engine oils" Please note the "or"

Manufacturers can specify a particular brand of oil but that is not to say that there are not fully compliant alternatives available. Sometimes manufacturers have even specified a particular brand for commercial reasons.

WK2 is The VM Motori 3.L Turbo diesel not the Merc Benz engine.

I think as long as it is LOW SAPS and meets ACEA C3 any oil brand would be OK in either engine.

Have attached pictures of the RYCO oil filter and the genuine Mopar part for comparison.

GDay Brockie, I posted this early on in the thread…..
"Hi Thommo

looks like good oil - but I couldn't see any approval to Chrysler MS11106.
There are a number of oils around that meet a similar spec but I am pedantic about using an oil that states it has the Chrysler approval.
Back ages ago when I discovered Shell had quietly changed their formula for Helix Ultra Extra and it no longer carried the approvals i did some research on what the MS11106 actually related to.
The information i got back at the time was that to gain the approval the oil has to meet a residue test whereby oil is heated on a hot plate and the carbon deposit is measured.

I particularly want to avoid any carbon issues which is why I have stuck with the only oil I can find available that does state the approval.
Of course it is possible that other oils may well have the required formulation, just that they haven't submitted for approval (or paid the money!)."

I've done my checking and I'm sticking with the MS11106 as my personal choice. In all my reading I've noted all sorts of wriggle wording from any amount of sources.
The MS11106 specifically relates to ash residue from heated oil, and as my engine recirculates crankcase fumes and oil mist into the intake system, then passes the exhaust through a particulate filter I want the highest spec oil I can get.
I'm prepared to source it, pay for it, and supply it to my dealer. The oil I use has the approval on the label. It is simply a risk management issue for me.

Brand and type of oil will be the choice of individual owners - i simply posted the information I had to hand in case it is of assistance or interest to others.
John
