It has been a long time (FAR TOO LONG ) since I have driven this track. When I last did this, I shadowed a falcon AU that was taking a family from Oodnadatta to Leigh Creek. No problems for normal road tyres but the track was wet - it may have kept the tyres cool. The driver made it through several shallow creek crossings ok.

If you want to know where your tyres are guaranteed to fail, it is between the towns of Craddock and Hawker in the Flinders Ranges. It will shred the BEST off road tyres because I have experienced it and seen it first hand and spoken to other drivers at the Hawker garage with very expensive off road boutique tyres.

Thanks for the input guys much appreciated. Loving the Jeep thing, seems to get a whole different vibe than my old Holden.

leaning towards the steelies 245/70/16 idea and keeping my stock 18's for town or highway. Does anybody have an recommendations on best place to pick these up in the Melbourne area?

Other than being able to increase wheel diameter what are the pro's and con's of doing a lift. Will it increase instability on the highway for example?

General consensus is that a good lift will improve stability, most common here is CRDStu lift. Regarding the UHF mounting, I had mine on the side of the bonnet using a modified bracket. Don't really recommend it though. If you have roof racks and plan to be out bush for a while then up top is the best spot. Also go for a higher gain antenna for that sort of big country touring. Just remember to it take back down when back home or buy one of these:

The standard wheel on the un-lifted KK is 235/60/R18 if I go with steelis and a 245/70/16 LT will there be any clearance issues on the width. Any off-set issue?

Will a standard XJ rim fit a 2010 KK Limited

Std XJ rims are 15" so probably wont clear the KK Brakes but I'm not sure on that one. What you are after is ether std 16" KJ wheels or aftermarket 16" Steelies. As for tyres the 245/70/16 are too small a diamter by 40mm or so.

As far as diameter goes 245/70/16 are 29.5" and are closest to stock 235/60/18 which are 29.1" you may get slightly higher diameter from the tyre make and what not, the maths isnt exact but close. On the same offset as stock rims you'll survive with width up to 245 wide on a 16" rim once you go 265 UCA clearance may be an issue.

I'd recommend my tyre which is 245/75/16 30.5" but i think it would spoil on your front when turning without a lift
