I have cleaned mine a few times after wheeling. I figured it was just a crap venting system not working properly on steep inclines or rough terrain.

Normally once batteries start venting they are on the way out but load and inductance tests are still good.

Might be worth a try if warranty covers the battery for 3 years.

Thanks very much guys. I'll take it to the dealership this week, see what they say and report back.

To close this thread off, I took it to the dealership, they tested the battery and the alternator and said all tests are OK. Although they did admit that the battery shouldn't leak they wouldn't replace it. There was then mention of mud splashes in the engine bay and evidence that the vehicle has been driven offroad outside its design specifications such as in water deeper than 150mm (yes 150mm), that I connected other accessories to the battery etc, etc. and it was all downhill from there.
So, I took it back and gave the battery and tray a good clean. I'll keep an eye on it until I get an Optima or something similar. Cheers.

Hey buddy, can I ask how long u had it before it started leaking? Just picked up my 2012 MY2013 JKU last week with 600kms on it, was a demo model, so probably on the lot for at least a year... Keen to know when I shud worry bout this, seems 12/18mo from other posters here.

Also cheers muchly for the heads up

I was surprised and pleased.

You might want to look in the owners manual regarding the water depth. On the earlier models it was listed as 19in, then it went to 31 in. Not sure what the current ones state. I would also check the warranty handbook as it will tell you what is covered and for how long. If it does not specifically mention the battery ask them where it states the battery is not covered and where it states using an offroad vehicle offroad voids the battery warranty? Also looking at the "additional" connections made to the battery there is again no mention in the manual about this and unless they were capable of overloading the battery they will not cause it to leak!
