This thing is going to be very cool. I am guessing the naysayers haven't driven a modern turbo petrol. Wifey has a 320i. 4 cylinder, 2 litre, turbo, 130kw, 8 speed auto. TBH you can barely even tell it has a turbo. Goes much better than an alloytec commodore. Please don't say a 4 cylinder is a 4 cylinder.
Modern turbo petrols go very well.
I have an auto jk crd. Leagues apart in power delivery and lag. Crd goes alright but takes a second to build boost.
This new engine is going to give v8s a run for their money. 225 kW turbo will have boost and torque down reasonably low hopefully.
The interesting aspect will be reliability. Time will tell.
Personally I hope current pentastar jks drop in value lots. Then I can get one!

Funny thing is how many V8s have been swapped into JK v's heck I can't think of a dingle person that has swspped a 4cyl in.....
FFS LISTEN to the market FCA and put a Hemi in the lineup.

next hill please , v8 cruise , 4 zip and need to rev to do the same , how many rev's now ?
CRD well big difference to petrol , would like to see this thing do in mud
and so on, I take it its wheel base is good ?
but the weight , problem is to reach that so called power there is a thing called power to weight ratio , how light is this thing ? does any one know ? or does all just L@@K at the specs ?
let it rev go on , just see how long it will last because it has to rev harder than a six and or v8. and lets think of long distance . who the frik buys a 4x4 of any sort to L@@K good ? OH HANG ON !!!! I guess all of those who want not to L@@K like a RAV4 or CRV , so on , YUP YUP YUPPY. my driveway is toooo steep . or MATCHES MY SHOES , or IM THE ANTS PANTS .
oh but some will know REVING and just what it means to have a engine REVING MORE to what a v8 or 6 has to do , get there faster WEAR MORE QUICKLY.
BUT NO NO its NEAR 300 BRAKE horse power will last right ? YUK YUK YUK.
I wouldn't buy one if I was overweight and need a ton of equip to carry.
OH but it carries my YAP YAP FUR ERRR I THINK ITS A DOG .

Because there are almost no cheaply available high power 4 cylinder engines around. It's really only been the last couple of years they have existed in production vehicles and only a few at that. Mercedes, BMW and hyundai?
A v8 is quite basic and well understood by lots of mechanics. The ecu and transmission etc have all been done before. Completely different to when it's installed by the manufacturer.
I think a v8 is definitely what a certain percent of the market is crying out for but that market is pretty much enthusiasts only. Your usual everyday family type buyer demands fuel economy and a relatively decent amount of power. This new engine will hopefully provide that. The pentastar already propels a jk quick enough most people will consider a v8 overkill.
With stock oem suspension I am not sure Jeep thinks the whole vehicle can justify a lot of power.
A v8 is cool and all but I just don't see it happening on a volume basis.

A turbo 4 is designed to rev.
The auxiliaries will all be rooted before the engine so that fact it needs to rev is negiliable to engine/vehicle life.
Weight is all speculation but pretty much every article suggests aluminium and a reduced weight.
A wrangler never was designed to carry lots of weight.

no matter how you look at it , PISTON GO UP ...PISTON GO DOWN 4 TIMES it is called four stroke , one revolution to 4 stroke , unlike two stroke which does it in TWO.
unlike a two stroke a engine has valves , cam so on , the two stroke does not , it relies on oil in the fuel to lube the upper cyls, and needs a SEALED CHAMBER , (the reason your mower dies and will not start) lets not forget the factor of THRUST in a engine and FORCED INDUCTION , a diesel uses less boost as its engine relies on compression , NOW petrol on the other hand has more of what they call BLOW BY , this is where the compression passes the cyls walls and goes into the sump , no matter which way you look at it , 4 need to work harder than 8 or 6 , lets look at ratio at a standard 1:1 ratio 4 cyls need to work harder than 8 a simple maths which has been known for quite some time. even if the engine is designed to rev harder , the equation = PISTON GOES UP PISTON GOES DOWN , a lot more than the 6 or 8 why IT HAS TO WORK HARDER.

You forgot GM 2 stroke diesels, Supercharged 2 stroke with exhaust valves & cam. Piston port for inlet. bad for pollution but plenty of power for size. most US war stuff was powered by them. Buses, trucks & tractors since. Sound like they are screaming but you are hearing the supercharger. Some were turbo as well eg 8V71TT.
