I would consider kicking a stink up with the dealer maybe? I remember years a ago a mate who had a TD XJ that cacked itself out of warranty. After a long fight, he got them to fix it.

My JK seems to use a crapload of oil. Doesn't blow smoke, can't find any leaks but it gets though about 500ml of top ups between changes. Definitely a worry.

please remember, the oil light doesn't mean the level is getting low as such, it means the pressure is low. That means that the level is WAY down already & the pick up is sucking air occasionally instead of oil. (If it is intermittent.)

interesting how an engine with really low k's could empty a sup of oil in that short number of ks. if it was a leakthere would be oil all ver the floor under the truck. so i guess it burns it, in which case there should be cloud of smoke following the vehicle. where it's all gone is the mystery.

Thanks, davidd - This is certainly one question that has crossed my mind - I'm perfectly happy to acknowledge that I should have been more diligent with my under-the-bonnet activities, but what floors me is that the engine has gone dry in 8000 km, when previously it was perfectly OK after 13000 km - It's a petrol engine, BTW, and there is no leak and no blowing of smoke - In addition, the oil light only flickered for a split second, which I don't really believe is a serious attempt to warn me that the oil pressure is critically low - Yes, it sucks, but that's a Jeep thing

If it's only spun a bearing you should be able to have it reco'd much cheaper than 8K.
