I made one out of 20mm (25mm?) plumbers conduit/pipe- white, not orange electrical conduit which is thinner in the wall and more prone to breakage. Was 3m long, and mounted to bullbar with a orange hi-vis sand flag zip tied to one end (drilled a couple of holes through it for the zip ties).

Lasted about 2 years, about $15 to replace through Reece Plumbing or Bunnings.

However, before a recent Simmo trip bit the bullet and upgraded to a Black Widow sand flag from ARB- cost megabux but in reality worth its price. Attaches via a air line blank fitting connected permanently to bullbar, clips on/off in seconds and has 3x 1m sections so you can vary the height.

I have hte black widdow one to... love it. Up in seconds, down just as quick... can vary the height from 2Mtrs to 3Mtrs... worth it... although max speed Ithink is 40kms with the black widow... the cheaper fiberglass ones I think you can do highway speeds with.

  • Telescopic squid pole 3M = $8
  • Coloured heatshrink over your 2-way radio's antenna only $3~$8 per 1.2m
  • Bike flag mounted off the roof only $15.00 (plus DIY mount)

$100+ is pure highway robbery!

Anyone mounted a sandflag to a stock JK?

Looking at doing this, might talk to Victor at BlackJack Welding, when I go to talk about the recovery Points

We do off road racing and the other week at portland we had to use one. They just had big long bits of bamboo with the material on the end. We had our duct tapes to the cage and it lasted at speeds over 150km/h over a full day of racing.

I believe in the mines they must be at least 3m from the ground. I bought one for $100. Yes it's expensive but can't beat breaking it down into 3 lengths for storage. I've also seen many a 'pole' whipped up at home end up in the sh!thouse cos they just fall apart.
