I guarantee you a XJ on 35's will go a lot further than a XJ on 31's, especially once you hit ruts or steps. If you drove everything on 31's unlocked then the tracks didn't need 35's and lockers

The engine wont struggle with 35's if the diffs are geared correctly.

In saying that 31's will get you a fair way in a XJ.

Cheers
Steve

Depends how hard u drive aswell. I have 3" lift and 30's which are a bit small i take it pretty easy and usually keep up with my mate's 4" lifted 80 with 35's and front locker. Having said that his will go a lot further when really pushed on rocks mainly due to the 35's and locker. Mine flexs as good as his with swaybar disconnects, which is a must, and hammers on the way home.. Plus cherokees aren't everywhere like cruisers and stand out go something different get an xj good all round fourby!

My Xj is on 2" (1" over sport) with 30" muds and no lockers, I am now running a Detroit Trutrac in the rear but it hasn't been offroad since the installation BUT with the standard barely functioning rear lsd mine would get further on rocky, loose or muddy terrain than my mates 80 (man) on 2" with 32's. better than another mates 79 troopy (man) with 2" and dual lockers and muds and also better than my other mates 120 prado (man) on 2" with 32" STT's, my other mates 105 cruiser with 32" STT's and dual lockers and auto is a bit more capable though.....
