I paid $4000 extra for a straight 4, so IMO cost can't be a significant reason. I'm not sure a v6 would put out heaps more torque but it might be quieter, smoother more responsive and give better fuel economy when cruising (oh, and it might be longer lived as well).

Look back to point 1 - cost.
Ford can do this to the Territory. They have a vehicle which has been designed from the ground up to see large amounts of torque (Turbo charged i6) as a result they have pre-existing driveline and any relevant chassis engineering changes required to suit the large torque outputs. Plus Ford has a much larger parts bin than Chrysler.
The JK was designed to have a pathetic 3.8L V6 strapped into it. There are no significant changes between the existing V6 or CRD vehicles. heck, option it with the 6 speed manual and you get a de-tuned engine because their pathetic clutch and gearbox cannot cope with the torque output of a 4 cylinder.
