notice the smile on my face.

I belong to the Nissan Patrol Club NSW/ACT and feel it is a top notch club. I take a lot of crap about the Jeep. But this pic tells it all. It is the top of Big Red lol.

On the Grenade issue it is why I didn't buy another Patrol. I had an MQ that is still in the driveway unregistered but when I wanted something new I remembered that at least one a year of the last 4 years of my membership a GU 3litre grenaded. That was enough to convince me. There are plenty that run just fine, but the percentage of ones that melt the 3rd cylinder was to high for me to risk.

I have had the 2005 patrol and now the jk wrangler.... In fact my patrol will be featured in next months 4wd action magazine!!!! Issue no 169!!!! Can't wait!!!

Now back to the topic of conversation.... I am really loving the jeep!!! I believe either both will do what your have described your using it for etc......

The patrol 3ltr needs some mods to help avoid the engine from blowing!!!! I did the following on my patrol...

1. Blocked EGT
2. Pyrometer gauge for the exhaust temps
3. Oil catch can
4. Cross country intercooler wi 10" fan
5. taipan 3" exhaust with vortex and ceramic coating

Just to name a few etc.....

The real problems with the 3lt is really in the early 2000- 2003 models....... that you hear all the problems...... My was a 2005.

Now with the jk wrangler if you want to tow, you should get a transmission oil cooler! Think it's comfortable and with the amount of accessories you can get for the wrangler......you can make it anything you want!

Patrol is bigger and heavier.... Both very capable off road.... Wrangler you can get good roof rack system for extra storage etc.....

Hope this helps a little?!?!??

as far as engine grenade- was only ever an issue with 2000-2002 models and usually ones with no service history - if fact i've come across more toyota 100s with blown engines than patrols but you don't hear about that on the net.

like all diesels - no regular service = trouble

not against jeeps at all - but the GU engine problem is way overstated
if it is between 2000-2002 the i wouldnt have a worry as it will be newer.

i am aware of those mods as i have been reading up. simple but hopefully effective.

there are some nice 2005 model GU patrols around.

i just want the comfort on long trips. i guess any 4wd be more comfortable then my 350z lol

thanks for the input guys.

I owned a gu before I got into Jeeps. The Gu is not bigger in the back seat than the JK. In the boot yes, cause of the roll bar. In terms of towing I use to tow with both initially around 2 ton daily and the Patrol being wider felt more stable. Power wise the JK was far better. Offroad the JK is far better. Reliability, dont believe the hand grenade. We did more gearboxes and diffs than engines. One of our 3ltr motors did 220000 with no dramas at all.

I had a GQ before the JK and I had to make the same decision as you. The big thing that swung me to the Jeep was that I no longer had to carry back seat passengers. The kids have grown up and can drive themselves nowdays. The Patrol is more comfortable in the back for anyone over 14 years. Although the Jeep has more rear leg room, the seat squab is shorter and is uncomfortable over long distances. The interior dimensions of the JK are almost the same as a GQ and with the seats down there is actually more rear room than a GQ with the rear seats folded down. If you're worried about the engine grenading issues try to get a CRD, I haven't heard of anyone having these problems yet (although probably out of your price range). The Jeep auto box is also better than the Nissan - five speed versus four speed. I tow a camper trailer and the Jeep handles it fine. The stability control also helps if your trailer gets the sways up, something that the Nissan doesn't have. At the end of the day I would have been happy in either vehicle but I am glad I got the Jeep.
