it guess it has been covered well enough above, but this is my 2c...
*if you are using 45l/100km, then you need the gas system looked at. mine was using about 35l/100 when i bought it some years back. a new gas mixer (ie the bit with the diaphragm in it) improved that by 20%. yours might only need an adjustment on the mixer to improve the situation.
*the standard ignition timing is too retarded for gas. i assume you, being no doubt a sane man who doesnt like throwing money away in large amounts, would run gas almost all the time? so twist the dizzy about 10deg advanced or maybe a tad more. if it pings on petrol under acceleration, back it off till that is acceptable. you will get better power/economy with more advance.
*my jeep (360v8 chero) now does about something above 25l/100 around town, a bit better than that on the highway.
*you might find that measuring over such a short distance as 40km is rather inaccurate; i have found that filliing stations can get more or less gas in the tank, depending on the pressure in their tank.
needless to say i dont agree about ditching lpg! i am sure that head improvements and EFI would significantly improve the petrol economy, but it is always going to halve your fuel cost to run any vehicle on lpg if you can.
cheers.
alexander.
