I just think it is ignorance. I worked at a Toyota dealer for a number of years and I can assure you they have plenty of issues.

I'll jump in as well...

What people like to think is that a 4WD is indestructible, they break just like all other cars, be it toyota, nissan, Hyundai, honda. What ive found is that people jump in a jeep, and because of their off road status expect it to go hard all day, without worrying about thing. Suddenly they break something, and revert back to the masses idea that jeeps are unreliable. They jump into a toyota, which they have paid double the price for, and are instantly more hesitant because they are throwing more coin about, and thus don't break anything.

Every car has its issues, and i'm not saying jeeps are faultless. But they arn't as unreliable as people make them out to be.

Having just spent the day replacing the rear main seal & clutch on my jeep, I could say I hate them but I dont. While I dont have the trans back in yet, all being well it will go back in the morning. It is no worse to work on than many other cars.
Because they are so capable off road, people tend to push them much harder & so one must expect them to break.
When talking to yuppies with xtrails or Toyotas I find they go very quiet we I say I have a jeep. Suddenly their big offroad adventure appears like a granny drive on a Sunday.

Using a Jeep offroad seriously requires a bit of mechanical sympathy, just like any 4WD. I believe that the biggest problem with Jeep is the current dealer network. My local dealer's service adviser told me not to bring in my WJ or XJs as they just weren't interested in old Jeeps.

Sure. Well, I know someone who went into outback 2 months ago with a fairly new diesel Prado and broke down in the middle of nowhere on the way to, what was supposed to be, a dream holiday. The nearest "town" was 300 km away. Had to wait for a tow truck 1 day. Then when it went into the dealers, it turned out to be a fried engine and what's worse, just ran out of warranty. Had to wait a week to get the engine replaced in QLD plus $7K out of pocket. Stayed at the caravan park, then picked up the car when it was ready and came back home to Sydney and no holiday.

I did a month trip in the deserts ALONE (with family), fully loaded and didn't have an issue. Now someone please tell me Jeep is unreliable and Toyota is durable and reliable. I wouldn't have went alone if I wasn't confident in the vehicle.

Not to mention a guy rocking up at the trails with a brand new Cruiser, fully equipped (lift, bar, winch, rock rails, snorkel, lockers front and rear and what not), attempting a very steep hill climb and BANG! Front diff gave up the ghost. Durable? Sure!

So far I'm on my second Jeep and both of them were reliable. Anyway, gotta go sleep, 4WD-ing tomorrow

all my mates bag out my jeep, yeah its had it issues when i first got it was in the work shop more than it was on the road for about 2yrs, but for the last 5yrs its just been common issues like bearings, uni's, etc.

i have to say i have not yet broken anything off road, but all my mates have.

i personaly find them easier to work on than toyota's and nissan's.

at the end of the day my jeep goes the same places with 33's (mates run 35's) and does it a lot easier, by just crawling up rarely need to push it past 2000rpm.

my brother is always fixing his landcrusier and it hardlys see's the dirt.

for the price you can pick XJ's up they are a great 4wd for the $$$

ive had mine for near 8yrs wouldnt own any other 4wd.
i only brought the XJ as i liked the look and the size of it, never knew anyone with a jeep before that.
