I have never had an issue with rear brakes so not even sure if I have had a car with the combination brakes. LOL!

Yep exactly what I said. Disc for foot brake and a small drum brake for the parking brake. The shoe has come apart or the spring has broken or it's full of mud.

That arrangement of handbrake is not specific to Jeeps only. Its a fairly common concept. I know some Prado/Land cruisers have it too.

And due to the small design of the drum setup you are supposed to pull the axle to work on them...... Joy oh Joy (I need to replace the shoes on the JK with the same setup...)

Gee, if I had known that was the way to change out the drums and shoes then it would of saved a lot of skin and effort.

Hammer, crowbar and lots of sweat to disassemble the rear park breaks.
Did find it really hard putting it back together again. The new shoe are really, really tight and the adjustments on the shoes are a fine tolerance.

Drums are a more effective brake to keep a stationary object stationary when there are no engine hydraulics available, hence many cars have drums for the handbrake.

Not that crash hot for stopping moving objects due to heat build up and therefore fading.

Are you sure about removal of axles. I believe you can access them easily by just removing the rotors. Inside hat of the rotor is where the pads grip for handbrake action.
