I sometimes wonder about the dealerships mechanics. Not too keen having an apprentice working on the wifes new beamer. I know that they are overseen and they have to start somewhere, but I would rather have my local 'one man band' mechanic do a more thorough, and shiploads cheaper job.

Cheers, Craig

Thing is are you sure they are that well overseen. A quick eye every now and then is more like it. I know we are different trade but our apprentices are hardly looked at unless they ask or stuff up. Lets face it bosses thend to argue that apprentices are not that cost effective even at crappy apprentice wages so it is highly unlikely that a full time wage gets wasted much to be overseeing them all the time.

Whilst I have not to date had any big issue with dealer servicing of any new make I have owned I have not come across impressive service and would never trust one. Certainly not impressed with my one and only contact with my local Jeep dealer.

Yeah craig, I got to agree, I really have that trust thing with mechanic, he is always fair and reasonably priced, but as GMEMUD said dealer costs of 300-700 for service is probably about what it is, but it still comes back to the trust thing, Regards, Hicko.

When I got my WG CRD I was in the same predicament except that the prefered mechanic was me, I get it serviced the first time but didn't like the job that was done, on looking at the fine print of the warranty I found that it didn't cover very much at all, so stuff it do it myself 150,000K later still going strong and the mechanic never leaves a mess, it is nearly due for it's 200,000K service which will cost me about $350 I believe the dealer would charge me $1500. I service my auto regularly (30,000k) where the schedule has it done every blue moon which I think is a major failing.
Go with someone you can trust, probably cheaper in the long run.
