Just an update for future reference if someone is looking for an answer on a similar problem...

it was the Water Pump. Congratulations to all the correct guesses

I finally took it into Footo to get my leaks sorted out once and for all - what I thought might have been a rear main seal turned out to be an Oil Filter Elbow Oring, and what I thought might have been a Head Gasket turned out to be a Water Pump - pretty happy when the total turned out to be about a third of what I thought it could have been

I know its not news to many brisbane-ites on here but a big +1 for FootoMotor - My first time but Peter seems like a great guy and really knows his way around in XJ

Great to hear mate. Those oil pump elbows can be tricky spotting leaks also. I thought the same when I got my XJ. Go out and enjoy now....Happy it was just the water pump. And we are always out for a good news story on a good workshop too.

Braith as a side issue, it sounds like you have had the oil filter adapter oring replaced? Not sure if you have cleaned out the oil from your starter motor since? However from experience I learned that it needs to be done at the same time or soon after before the SM fails. My mech did not know the former and 12 months later I was told by an auto electrician why my SM failed. .

Regards A

Thanks for the head's up AG, I recently stripped and cleaned it as it was playing up (as you say, probably due to the Oil Filter Adapter leak), but I should rip it out and give it another clean out just to be safe.

I think that it would be good to have a thread where people can recommend mechanics for diesel XJs. Not sure if yours was a diesel though...?
