Sounds to me like the trans filter may be blocking up. Because of the way it is situated in the sump if there is any junk in there it will gradually pick it up until the point it loses suction/flow and you lose drive, then you turn off the engine and the suction stops and all the junk falls back to the bottom of the sump and the process starts again. This is assuming you lose both fwd and rev? Then there the burnt smell, this is either the cause or the effect, if the trans is sad and you have a failing clutch this will be producing the junk, if it is the effect it will be from the trans losing pressure due to the blockage and the clutch slipping from lack of apply pressure.
Billnick, try to avoid the "additive" if you can, trans lip seals will go hard over time, a dead give away for this is when you have slippage/delayed apply/flaring between gears when the trans is cold and then once warm it operates fine. There isn't too much you can do apart from a reco/rebuild, I have seen the effects internally of these additives, the attack the seals to make them soft again, but eventually the seals just fall apart from it. It kinda seems like it is aimed at people whom need to get their trans working quickly and cheaply, like your selling the car or need to get it working.
There was a kid working at a servo here in town a few years back now that didn't know any better and wasn't told otherwise and he was just trying to be good at his job, he was topping up people's transmission and power steering reservoirs with brake fluid, funnily enough this had nearly identical results on the seals as the additives, however, it eventually made them too soft and turned them to mush.
