Small update. So I got it home, charged the battery and same as before obviously, cranks fine but will not start. Bled the fuel to the pump again, loosened injector nuts and am getting a small amount of fuel to the injectors, but not as much as I would expect. Put a jumper wire from the batt+ to the solenoid and could hear it clicking. Got the wife to crank while I held wire in position but still no start. I checked the resistance of #1 injector and it is ~100 ohms. Checked all fuses in fuse box under bonnet and all looked ok.
Could the fault be an engine speed sensor? Or is there any other fuses I should be checking. Seems very strange that it would just stop but still crank.
I leave for work for a fortnight in the morning so take your time thinking about it

You could try & start it on WD40. Just spray away into the air inlet while cranking. Keep spraying until the diesel fuel takes over.
Or put a rope on it & tow start it. No point in killing the starter motor.
#1 injector sensor has no effect on starting.

No haven't tested the glow plugs as it was running when it first stopped. But I do know they have power as when I was loosening #4 injector the wire from the glow plug has a broken clip and shorted on the spanner. Checked glow plug fuses after that and all fine thankfully. I read in the manual that the engine speed sensor talks to #1 injector and if faulty will not let the engine start. But anyway it was a 2 second check for piece of mind. Also shot a bit of aerostat down its throat and it wants to go. Might try the wd40 for a longer time.

I ran mine for about 4,000km with #1 sensor open circuit. Tried the resistor thing ~ didnt do a thing.
If it was me, I would have it on a row rope. Did it a few times when my starter was crook.

Your taking me back to the days of 2 stroke mx bikes Layback, with having to run them along and clutch start them! I was glad to find the #1 injector seemed ok anyway, I wouldn't have been surprised if my uncle had been driving this thing with it being crook.
I will invest some more time in the glow plugs when I get home, but like I said the engine was running and hot when it first stopped and wouldn't restart.
My plan is to hook it up to another fuel supply as well and just be certain there is nothing wrong further back, but can't see it...

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming. Can't see there being a stupid suggestion to a stupid fault!
