Technically we are supposed to but I usually leave that sort of AR behavior for the Mermaids. Most times if it is clearly visible you will be OK. They look for the obvious like plates tucked under or close to the side of the spare.
Remember it is very important that the speed camera can get a clear shot of your number plate. An obstructed plate might impact government revenue raising against all those poor buggers exceeding the limits by 5KPH.
