Tariff protection? Are you kidding me?? Company's have to pay GST to import and have to charge it (assuming they sell over a piddly 50kpa) then they have to admin & report it and pay based on very strict time frames. Penalties for not adhering are strict too.
I once believed in user pays type of GST but now I am very against it and i firmly believe it doesn't work in a modern society and the threshold just ads more weight to that opinion.
It IS a burden on aussie business NOT protection. And IMHO its not a fairly applied burden. A business can't say ok thats under $1000 so theres no tax....
As for catching up, i don't think a single country that has GST has a threshold as high as ours. Check out this vid:

So if there isnt a 300% markup to Aussie end users where is the difference? I recently wanted to buy a 5th alloy wheel for my new Trailhawk and the local dealer quoted $1,631. I asked why so expensive since I can buy one retail from the US and ship to my door for $348 US (about $500 Aus at the moment).

He had no answer for that one.

Coincidently that's more than a 300% increase..

The extent to which Jeep are allowed to get away with ripping off the consumer with blatantly inflated pricing, including rate per hour for servicing, is one of the reasons that i have decided not to buy one of these brands of vehicles again, as much as I have enjoyed my JKU.

I have worked out that over the 8 years of ownership the JKU has cost me about $2000 per year in parts, all imported. Most parts have been for maintenance, wear and tear etc but even so, some of the things that have worn out have certainly not done so on for example, my Magna S/W which has done 280000km. I have done much of the labour myself, which has also helped keep costs down.

The JKU has been without doubt, the most expensive car that I have owned in terms of parts replacement. I would have averaged possibly $4-5000 per year if I relied on buying parts from Oz based dealers.

I will continues to vote with my wallet, irrespective of dealers/businesses that provide self interested arguments as to why they think Oz consumers r fair game for a rip off. I work damned hard for my money and I don't see that I should simply roll over and let myself be scratched on the tummy while my money is being stolen from me.

That's why I said ignore the dealerships
Most parts salespeople in dealerships even admit that the prices are crazy - but it's not often their specific markup.
FCA as I understand buy the product from FCUSA - then they probably add their markup, then the Dealer Group buys from FCA and adds their markup and then the dealership buys from the group and adds their markup - each adding to the ridiculous prices compounded by the multilevel purchasing process.
But as I understand it's not one entity specifically marking it up.
Not justifying just an observation.

I think dealers markup is the real problem here. I once quoted the same thing from 3 different dealers and came back with some amazing price difference. But at least I know if I ever need something, I don't need to bother with which dealer.
