Oh f@#k yeah, the other head's coming off too.
Now I'm in this far I'll be replacing the timing set as well, as you said no point in doing a half assed job.
Hopefully the right hand head is healthy!

Good to hear, while you are there another thing I'd be inclined to replace is the water pump and check the radiator to make sure it is healthy too.

Radiator and pump were done only 6mths ago, I've got the invoices for those.
I will get the radiator cleaned out though, just to be sure Jason.

With a bit more time up my sleeve I got the other head off.....DOUBLE F#$K!
No.2 cylinder intake valve seat is non existent, apart from the bits of it jammed into the combustion chamber and piston.
No.2 pot:
and the head:
I've weighed up all my options and decided on a full rebuild. I can get a second hand HO engine for $2500 with 187,000Km off Poly 4X4 or $2900 with 90,000Km from Queensland or I can rebuild (new pistons, rings, bearings, timing set, oil pump and remanned heads) including machine work for $3500 max.
Rebuild it is.
Looking a bit sad:

Well, the heads have been dropped off to be hardness tested to ascertain whether or not they can be re-manufactured.
Fingers crossed, replacement HO heads aren't that easy to come by

Just heard back, the heads have passed the hardness test so a re-man is good to go. Need to pick up an intake valve though, one's bent (the valve with the dropped seat).
Rockauto are gunna make some bucks from me this month.
