I carried a RTT along the Gary Junction Hwy and along the Kimberley etc 8/15. It was attached to a Kongo Cage roofrack. The roof rack carried it well although I have had it reinforced over the years. The COG and mileage r affected of course but I found the RTT easy to set up and put down (no more time than a tent) and it was very comfortable. Best only to pack down with bedding but no pillows cos harder to do up the cover. No leaks or dust got in. Quite a height to climb up... u will need an extension for the ladder.
I don't think that a RTT is more convenient or easier to set up than a tent. You can get a lot of good tent for the money spent on a RTT plus the carrier which all up coould cost more than $3 grand.
I would not rely on the strength of the fibreglass roof to carry the weight of 2 people plus all the rocking and rolling pitching and yawing that it will have to contend with crossing the desert and especially somewhere like the Simpson.
Perhaps consider a good quality tent for a few hundred dollars (I don't think that u need the expensive name brands because there is as good out there for a lot less (have a look at Ray's outdoors catalogues etc for bargains). Also think about buying a good quality swag as a good alternative. When I did the Canning Stock route, I slept in a very basic swag under the stars.
Also remember that at night the desert gets very very cold..... in which case a good stretcher is worth buying.
