Years ago, i had exactly the same symptoms. I chose to ignore the warning signs and she broke down completely on me and i had to get it towed home.... lucky i was with the RAC. I can't remember which one was the culprit but the mechanic said it was either the coil or the CAM in the distributor, so i reckon that the fella's below have put you on the right track.

I was going to say the O2 sensor but after reading more I think its the cam or crank sensors might as well change them to eliminate everything but what is your average temp after say 30 mins running

I recon change the crank angle sensor too. I had something like this on a rb30 and it was a tiny bit of rust on the disc.

about halfway even on a really hot day, ive never seen it go above half. I've ordered a new cam sensor i have the cps and an new ignition coil i'm gonna put in over the weekend see how i go, the cps sensor is in a pain in the ass spot not much room to work with..

Drop the front of the driveshaft. Its only 4 bolts and saves you dropping bolts into the bellhousing.

When I first got my Jeep it had similar problems. I went through and changed all the sensors and coil. For me it turned out to be the fuel filter/regulator.

I'm not fixing it, I'm improving it!
