Was this on an ARB bar?
So apart from the slots and mounting holes no other mods to the bar?
How about the bar to the chassis mountings?

ARB bar.

I intended to put some braces on the bar from the winch mounts to the chassis mounting plates but never got around to it. you could plate it under the top of the bar to brace it. The bar to chassis mount plates should be strong enough, Looked to me that the bar is more likely to bend in the middle but it hasnt.
Have had it stuck a few time & used it. No bending of the bar has occurred but maybe I havent been stuck enough to fully load it.
Turning the ends around so the leaver pointed up & fitted through the hole cut in the bar was a challenge as the ends didnt rotate exactly 90 deg.

pictured below is an excerpt from the Parts Manual 94-96.
The small print states xj cherokee

Was this a factory fitted option?...any comments

here is another possibility

the above one is listed for sale on ebay and the seller mentions he uses a dismountable cradle winch front & rear receiver hitch mounts.

I hope to fit a winch, but dont want a heavy winch/bar.
will probably fabricate something myself, but the engineering has to be strong

You know I've never seen that in my parts manual before but it's in there, interesting....

there is a 2nd page showing winch, as u now know

I am thinking that the mounting plates are not unlike what forum member Richard Buttocks shows fabricated on his build thread...also search "backbone" on this forum for their custom setup.

I am assuming all 3 methods utilise 2 x tie plates (one bolts thru steering box bolt holes), then weld a fabbed cross plate, then whatever else one needs to customise.

for the receiver hitch mounting, this must?? involve expanding the big cutout in the front crossmember tieplate, then I could cut up an old hitch and reinforce it properly.

Hopefully could hide behind a hinged number plate.

I have done a fair bit of winching over the years, as I work and go off-road on my own a bit, but DD 99% of the time.

I also noticed the snow plow option in there, not very useful here though....
