Man I know nothing about autos I spent $3500 getting mine done up but even now cruising in top gear using cruise control if it even looks at a slight rise it wants to thrown down a gear when driving you can use your approach speed revs and no drop down vacuum leak testing soapy water?

I don't mind it dropping one gear. That's normal. Dropping two gears, that's my problem.

perused the AW4 manual for another project, (as well, as getting to know my Jeep)

BUT, the pre-update manual

however, following the diagnostic charts, some points;

* it suggests disconnecting the TCM ! and driving manual ( which presumably would rule out electronic sensor malfunction ?...dont know what the post-update manual has to say on that though, be worth checking)

* test/replace 2nd solenoid (be lucky though)

* maybe take it to a good auto trans specialist for a test drive, and see what they got to say

OK, so after reading this, the only two sensors that affect the auto transmission are the TPS and VSS.
I'm shooting on the dark here, but the VSS may be faulty. A few months ago I bought the correct size speedo gear for my tires. When I went to install it, the correct size gear was already installed. So my speed was still out. I might have a spare somewhere.

I'm going to see about how to make a vacuum guage. Then start measuring how much my car sucks!

Sounds plausible. Do you definitely know your diff ratios? I am really interested in how this turns out. I guess if you know a private XJ thats got cheap parts, just swap out things like tps, vss, tcm etc.. until you hit it on the head. I dont think it has much to do with your solenoids as reading the articles, they are just binary switches and all your gears are working, just going a bit buggy.

Good luck,
Cheers,
