Its the same as anything - it needs regular maintenance to keep it tip top and will need money spent no matter what make/age vehicle you have. We have a 03 KJ CRD that just ticked over 200,000km (we've owned it since 60,000km), and put 3.5K into it recently (timing belt, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt plus a few other bits). This might seem a lot but what you consider it's a 13 year old car and our regular services are about $250-300, we're definitely coming out on top considering the amount we would have to spend for all the lifts, tyres and other goodies on a newer car to get it to where our current 4x4 is.

Economics 101. Ask yourself how big the cheque has to be to maintain or trade a vehicle. Trading costs money and you have to take into account the immediate depreciation on any new vehicle.
Far cheaper to keep maintaining something you own.
