I'll document the project and the battery weight will depend completely on the size of the pack.

Using a Nissan Leaf battery as a (very rough) guide, it weighs in at 12.2kg per kWh of capacity. The original fuel tank is 70L so I could probably put in about 15kWh of battery in just the weight difference of a full fuel tank and the engine.

The 2003 KJ uses a PCI bus.

Later years used mainly CAN bus with some PCI bus and some SCSI.

There are Theory of Ops sections and the Wiring Diagrams are in section 8W

You can download the Service Manuals for most years except the 2004 from the link above in the Stickies which is the link here: http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ

For the 2.5/2.8 Export models definitely also download the section "2.5_2.8 export diesel" as it covers the actual engine used in the Export models.

You did say motor swap, not engine swap. I was involved in AEVA for many years and had a friend that turned his Ford Capri to electric. 4wd vehicles will do well to go hybrid electric but fully electric will have range issues unless the vehicles weight can be greatly reduced - ground up redesign with lots of composites and lightweight alloys.

I’m not against the idea in any way and will be interested to see how it comes together. I’d like to do something similar to a lighter vehicle.

It is an EV conversion. I have some pretty heavy duty components, including an 11" DC EV motor and a Soliton 1 controller. This will easily exceed the HP and torque of not only the 3.7, but the diesels and v8s.
I have just started getting an interest in EV's, particularly DIY done properly so really interested in any and all info you care to share on your journey

Thanks for the info and support.

I'll be sure to start up a project thread when I have something to actually post. At the very least this is a fun project and I would love to share my experience.

For those that can't wait for me to start, here is a page of a Land Rover that has been very nicely converted.

Default Swap

When I was considering an EV conversion
My way around having to much battery weight was going to be a small single cylinder engine turning over a couple of Alternators to supply the current demand of the electric motor and the small battery capacity to buffer it.
Intended running the IC motor on LPG tuned to run at a fixed RPM.

Preferred system voltage was going to be 48 Volts but alternators aren't available in that voltage that I,m aware of so would have gone 24V.

Anyway my health doesn't allow much room for projects at the moment, again good luck with it. Sounds like fun.
