I just pulled every fuse in the internal box under the driver's side dash. None are broken. Looking through the online manual I can't find the details for the diesel on fuses etc under the hood. I'll keep looking.

If fuse is fine, then measure voltage from shifter unit, pins 1 and 11 (orange and white wires). If shifter plug is connected, then TCM must have +12v as well. If shifter plug is unpluged, then TCM does not have +12 volts.

Bodgie, As mentioned above I've done the key shuffle and no error codes are showing. I have also previously looked at purchasing one of those readers but I've got an iPhone so it will not work, only suitable for android.

Hopefully it will be fixed with a simple fuse replacement tomorrow.
Buy a cheap android device, it will be worthwhile in the end. The three key shuffle won't show low oil volume, the TCU may through some other codes though.

Have a read through this page, may be some useful info there for you:

Guys, thanks for the input. I didn't get a chance to look at the car today, maybe tomorrow. I did get quotes of well over $200 to get the car to the mechanic (about 60km away) so not going with that. I can get it to a local crowd for free through the insurer but will tinker a bit more first to see if I can sort it.

Bodgie, that link is a good read. Tomorrow I'll get under the car and do a thorough check of the plug etc to make sure that is all good and clean. I'll suss out a new shifter as there's a chance that's the culprit. I'm leaning towards either the shifter, the TCM, or possibly the solenoid/s as the problem. I should be able to get a shifter locally and then if necessary go further. But I'll wait see what I find tomorrow first.

As to measuring voltages, the only way I'll be able to do that is to take out the plugs and not sure if that will get me a correct reading. Let me know if you know. Thanks again.

To check that power goes to the TCM removing the plugs is the best way.

Cheers Adrian. I can tell you that when I took out the plugs the car wouldn't even start, so that tells me that something is working there.

I've just crawled under the car and there is a bit of fluid around the electrical plug front drivers side of transmission so just checking removal procedure of that.

Okay, so investigations attached.

I took out the 13 pin plug at the trans and there was lots of oil in there. I cleaned it all out including some in one of the pins, put it back together and.......... no change. Does tell me it's time to change that housing though. Local MB dealership only sells it as part of the electronics plate for around $600 but they are available on eBay for around $26 delivered from OS. See attached pic for identification plate of transmission.

I removed the plug back of the shifter and took voltages with the ignition on. Across plug 1 and 12 I got 8.5V. Nothing across 1 and 11.

I replaced that plug then removed the plug from the TCM and took a voltage across pins 29 and 30 as mentioned. Nothing showing at all. Tried other pins and nothing. See photo attached.

Guy from Mercedes locally said he thought it would either be the electrical plate or the shifter. I hate lucky dips.

Let me know your thoughts guys. Again the help is appreciated.
