Yes I’ll definitely go diesel next time. Had to carry more fuel, was the only petrol vehicle, didn’t have the same grunt.

For what it is worth, I have not done the Simpson (plan this yr as part of a bigger trip) but have done a lot of other desert and other tracks in the 07 JKU 3.8. petrol.

Loaded to the hilt and with a trailer I get about the same fuel as the 3.6 in sand etc. Will be Simpsoning with a RTT and should score a little better but I calculate fuel on a worse case basis. I carry in-tank 145 l and would normally take 6 x 20L jerry cans. Calc use in sand @ 1.5 times the worse case rate.

Tyres always MT & 10 ply truck rated. No punctures since using (more than 100000km) and no side wall tears. 2 spares on rims. Also tyre repair kit - good quality handle; not plastic shit.
Have done the Birdsville t in a magna with 16 in road tyres pulling a caravan and no punctures so track must have deteriortated quite a lot. Key is correct pressure and mod speed.

Use a CongoCage roof rack that has had reinforced gussets and M10 bolts/screws etc and no problems with cracking since all this in place.Does sway a bit tho.

Calc 10 l/day water use and carry enough for extra 10 days plus extra 10 day food supply for emergency. I use multiple water containers so as not to lose the lot if 1 main tank ruptures etc.

Sorry if I have left the track but just my tuppence worth. Off to Arnhem land in July via Simpson and then home via GRR again, down west coast and WAPET track and Connie Sue to Nullaboring. Should be fun, if nothing breaks.

Interesting you say the Oodnadatta was so trashed, I was up that way in July too, did a fair stretch of it from Marree, my mates headed to Birdsville to cross the Simmo.
I was in the WJ with stock JK rims and tyres and they handled it like a champ, I ran them at about 30psi and was able to sit at around 80kph most of the way.
Just bought a WK2 and will be heading up that way to do the Simmo later this year and already worried about the low profile 20" tyre options. What size rims and tyres were the others running that got all the punctures?
