Yeah, thanks guys. I think I might find one and swap; and then maybe get a kit to rebuild this one, at my 'leisure', as lack of work area is an issue at present. What is a reasonable price range for one in good order - anyone have leads as to where I might find one? I'll put a wanted post on this site too...

the easiest way is to check both Gumtree and ring wreckers..I would expect a wrecker to ask maybe $300, only guessing though, nothing to lose by making some calls.

I am not absolutely certain the NP242 remained the same from 94-01 when they were sold in Oz, best Google that, its listed on a USA site, there is a split in spline count, but I think our years are the same

Thanks awg, haven't found one yet, but have started hunting. Pretty sure on the 23 splines, but a little concerned about possible differences in input shaft lengths...will become easy with both on the ground i guess!
I'd happily swap these concerns for the poxy caravan park team I'm dealing with at present...
Cheers.

Your Jeep will not only come back to life, but it will keep going forever. These cars are easy to own, and put back on the road due to parts availability. Life would never be the same without one as there is only one jeep.

Ha, I’ll grab some of your optimism eksjay - it’s the ‘Just Empty Every Pocket’ part which I could do with a break from! I must say, as a purchase of the side of the road, I could have done worse - haven’t been stranded yet...

I've bought a TC from Jeeepart Recyclers, and upon unwrapping today, have spotted a concerning difference.
I had a couple of more questions for you helpful people, and so will blurt them all out now, and express my gratitude for anyone who might be able to guide this worried camper forward!...

- I bought an articulated 14mm stubby spanner, as I believe the TC nuts are hard to access...does the transmission have to be dropped at all for the swap; as I am ok with supporting it, but start fearing when anything else is required? I'd rather dislocate my shoulder and get greasy and swear a lot, than raise and lower transmissions on jacks etc...

- Is it best to lie under the TC and 'catch' it(I know it ain't light)...or lower it on a jack...or drop it onto pillows or something? I have a trolley jack, car jacks and blocks, but not much else.

- The rear output has a different cone/housing on it than my TC, and I know nothing other than recalling talk of slip yokes and eliminators. The first two images here are of the wreckers TC, and the next is the one currently in my XJ:

My plan was to swap them so I can rebuild mine at my 'leisure', but the apparent difference in output has me baulking...
If the wreckers TC is more desirable than mine, perhaps I am better off rebuilding it, and adjusting drive shaft or whatever, and then scrapping the current one... He assured me it was in good working order, but I am just smart enough to know that it may well be leaking, and no better than mine is currently...it is stamped 94, whereas mine is 95.
I'd be grateful of some wisdom if anyone has any to share...
Cheers, Jude.

so your 95' or earlier Xj has a wet yoke, the new transfercase, has a dry yoke and is from a 96+.

the new one will bolt up to yr trany. IIRC the over length of the transfer case is the same or very similar. however a bit of searching with google about fitting dry yoke 242 to pre 95 xj should tell you all you need to know.

good luck with it.
