Same thing a few years back when I had to rebuild the front diff on the WJ, Jeep were a joke, I laughed at them, wanted way too much, one mob wanted over $200 to diagnose the problem - I knew it was the pinion bearing was munted, but hey, other places wanted anywhere between 500 and a grand for the bearing kits, needless to say I got the full bearing kit from Rockauto for under 200, got slugged a bit for delivery, ordered it Friday night and it was on my doorstep the Tuesday morning, quicker than buying from Sydney ffs.
Ended up spending a day under the Jeep, bought some new tools that were needed and I was happy to have done it myself.

I had an AC Delco water pump from Rockauto for my TJ. That lasted seven years I think so around 80K km. To replace it I've gone for Gates this time, been in around 18months and around 16k so far.

Replaced the water pump today. Wasn't the worst job I've done on the Jeep, but obscenities were sounded lol.

Some tips for anyone doing this themselves.

Allow at least half a day if you haven't done this before. Maybe 2-3 hours if you have.
Beware and ignore any instructions or videos for LHD.
Drain radiator.
Remove the negative battery cable.
Remove the air intake to the throttle body.
Unbolt the AC compressor and alternator.
You need to remove the alternator but to remove this you need to unbolt the AC compressor so you can lift it with the hoses a little so you can get the alternator out. You should be able to do it without needing to ungas/regas the AC.
Remove water pump. Remember where each bolt goes.
Install new water pump and complete above in reverse.

I ended up getting a GMB pump from Ozie Spares in Fairfield for $96. No one had Gates that I could find, and the next in stock option was Repco at $164. Apparently GMB is also a good brand, but when I got there it was actually a Tru-Flow box, but it has GMB stamped on the casting. Made in China so I don't know if it's a cheap rip off or if GMB make them for Tru-Flow, but needed it back on the road so meh.

Interesting though the impeller wasn't cast or stamped metal, appeared to be plastic! Should I be worried....

I have a 2000 4.7 and I didn't have to remove the alternator.

I unbolted the fan hub and fan and sat it in the bottom of the shroud
Removed the belt
Unbolted the water pump and with a bit of fiddling got it out through a hole in the bash plate underneath, installed the new one the same way.
