What is happening with the declining quality of mechanical work we are seeing? It seems to have gotten a lot worse in recent times, maybe young apprentice mechanics are not being taught properly from day one anymore.

Good that you got it away from the cowboys.

If the Jeep mechanic is competent they'll know pretty quickly someone tried to butcher it whether you tell them or not. If you tell them before they get into it they should be even more vigilant in looking for signs of 'interference' damage, which if found and rectified will be to your advantage.

I have a theory, that is the situation in qld at least.

IMO workplace based training is partially to blame.

The old way, apprentices went to tafe college for x amount of weeks a year and the would work through lawn mower motors through to Ford v8's. 3 speed Holden gearboxes to electronic front wheel drives. Auto electrics and manual machining.

A lot work of workshops now farm out major repairs such as gearboxes diffs, engines ect.

So if the scan tool don't tell em what's wrong there buggered because they only theoretically understand what's happening inside any of these components

All true, but there is also the level of complexity of the vehicles and components. That is why specialisation has become common place. No way your average workshop is going to tear down your ZF 8 speed auto.....hell, even removing the intake manifold from the 3.0L diesel is a nightmare.

I’m from a previous generation and retired but I continue to be amazed at how more recently trained personnel that solely rely on diagnostic scan tools but don’t engage their brain to interpret the customer complaint and the symptoms observed and include the scan data to arrive a logical course of action.
Although retired I receive a steady stream of requests from owners of classic cars because they cannot find modern workshops that can sort out carburetor problems it is becoming increasingly rare to find someone who can replace and set ignition points or time a distributor. All basic skills that require some system knowledge and logical steps to resolve.

I recently had a 1960’s V8 that was brought to me on a truck after being attempted to be fixed for some weeks in a workshop, it was an old friends car and he was desperate so I agreed to have a look. It was clearly running one cylinder down and regularly backfiring through the carb after 10 minutes of work it was again running sweet as a bird. One of the exhaust rocker adjustment screws had sufficiently backed off the number 3 cylinder exhaust valve and was no longer opening. Just basic troubleshooting applying logical processes.
