I've been able to source a second hand motor that's been pulled out of a 2006 TJ. 155,000kms on the clock, comes with full service history for around $1k.

I'm thinking of going ahead with this purchase, interested in your thoughts.

Anyone know if a 2006 motor will be easy enough to install into my 2000 TJ ?

They are the same motor, however, enough changes from 2005 on to make it NOT a straight swap.

I would buy it if it looks ok.

Strip down to a long block and rebuild from your current engines parts.

In any case, a straight swap at 155,000kms engine would probably end up with enough issues to need work anyway like head gasket ect….

2006 will be coil packs, 2000 probably dizzy.
Another thing to think about is auto to manual.
I know 99 manual motor needs bearing in end of crank taken out for the torque converter on a 99 auto to fit.
Job itself isn't over hard.
I propped new motor with new brass welsh plugs, water pump ,sump gasket, tappet cover gasket ,plugs , rotor and dizzy cap
Then a day to swap them .

Was the horse a backup in case the car didn’t run when you were finished ?!

Other things too with the later motor like oil pump, PCM, CPS, exhaust, oil pressure sender, ect…..

So am I better off identifying the root cause of my knocking sound (i have an inspection camera on the way), then order and replace parts as required?

The 2006 motor sounds more like a head-ache then a solution.
