I personally prefer the XJ for ease of modification etc etc but in saying that the XJ is pretty long in the tooth and there are more and more mods available for the KJ now. I see CJ Brads KJ everyday and it's a nice looking machine and performs well every time I've seen it offroad.

For dirt road use the KJ has to be better with a more modern front end (albeit with less travel and offorad potential)

If it was me I'd be looking at a WJ over the KJ if I were to replace the XJ. If I was limited to the KJ due to cost then I'd go the Diesel over the petrol.

Cheers
Steve

Have a look at last months 4wd monthly (it'll probably be tacked on to next months issue), they have a story about running jeeps around africa. The herald sun had a review last week i think, no it was the weekly times!,

all comes down to what you want it for.

my advice is that if you are only using it for 3 or 4o camping trips a year, and are happy with the space of your current XJ, then the KJ would be a good step. If you don't want to do any mods, then i don't see an issue. although a lot of reviews mention the lower front end, other people that drive them say its not a problem as long as you keep it in consideration.

and above all -- go the KJ to keep it in the Family.!!

The XJ was a product of some 22 year old design and tec stuff. anybody who seriously believes the XJ is a better vehicle than the KJ has got their head in the sand. I had a new 95 limited and now have a 04 sport 3.7, the XJ was a great 4X4 but the KJ is better in every way that I use it, admittadly I do not do rock crawling stuff but a fair bit of dirt road and some tracks and a lot of highway and IMHO the KJ is light years ahead. Only thing I would do different is go for the deisel.
