Thats interesting about the K&N filters, very informative. I've been thinking about taking that intake off from behind the grill and doing a mod on it as it seemed restrictive but was worried about water. I did find a good rundown on fitting a Navara Snorkel to a ZJ on the NAGC web site www.nagca.com/home.php but the price of a snorkel and not really seeing what it looked like in the flesh sort of turned me off.

You can use a Safari Snorkel for a Mazda Bravo TD, looks good and wasnt to hard to fit. Get 2 90 degree 70mm plastic downpipe bends and some 70mm downpipe to run it into the side of your airbox, cap the front opening and you away.

Here's another idea I've been playing with: http://www.madxj.com/MADXJ/technical...tomSnorkle.htm

This kind of intake will give a little ram effect from pressure at bottom of windshield. If the intake was unhooked from firewall and just open under hood, a person could ford pretty deep water. That's my thoughts anyway.

Thumbs up

I know a fella with a Mazda that has a snorkel so I will check it out may even get some piccies, as for drawing air from the vents at the bottom of the windshield I don't think thats possible with a ZJ, will have to have a look at mine though I have been thru a few crossings where the water has surged over the bonnet even with a blind on and with that set up I would have been worried but it is a great idea, had a mate that for water crossings could change his air intake to draw from in the cabin ( on a 'Cruiser) seemed to work but was noisy as hell and you needed you windows down.

Yeah Drover. That would be ideal. Have it setup so it could draw from firewall/cowl or switch it to draw from inside.

I looked at mine and even with left hand drive (steering column, master cylinder/brake booster in the way) it looks like I could install the firewall/cowl air idea. With the fitting in firewall/cowl covered and air tube just under back of hood, it would be pretty safe in deep water. Have a fitting for air tube that is mounted to hood with about 1 1/2" of air intake from underside of hood to hook air tube to. Even with surging onto hood, that area right under hood should stay dry unless water around vehicle is within a couple inchs of hood. Distributor and plugs would short out before water got that deep in engine compartment. Having an electric radiator fan system that can be turned of when fording helps keep engine compartment dry too.

You just might be surpised about what a petrol engine can do as long as it can breath ive had mine fully submerged ie stationary in water over the bonnet for 20 seconds till i managed to reverse out, yes it wasnt to happy for a while till it dried out but it's still running fine it's my tcase i had a problem with after it sucked in a gob full.

I'll bet it wasn't! Yes, it takes awhile for water to rise in engine compartment. When I was young and crazier, we used to get a run at the river and try to make it across. This was when it was raging from rains so was about 3-4' deep. By the time you got to other bank engine was usually protesting on about half as many cylinders as before. And if you didn't make it, current pushed you out onto a sandbar about 50 yards farther down. This was a lumber logging operation, so always had a few cats around to pull us out.
