Hey DownSouth looks good.

Big but coming up tho, the hinges arent built to take the extra weight, especially if you combine it with bouncing down dirt roads.

As a tour guide in remote central Oz for the last 7 years i've seen first hand what doing this does to doors and hinges........ completely f@#ks them even tearing door skins.

You can probably get away with it for the odd (very odd) weekend but any longer or on badly corrugated roads and i'll think you'll regret it. The JKs arent blessed with very thick sheet metal which compounds the problem too!!!!!

But if any one comes up with a good solution please tell me so i can bolt my highlift on too.

I have considered the extra weight issue, And I will keep and eye on it.
You may be right.
Regular inspections will soon tell.
Hope the doors are designed beyond the regular spare wheel burden but somehow I dont think so....

..Yes I'd be wary. Had a KJ with a slight rattle that could never be pin pointed.. and a back door that was reluctant to close. Did the 'revolving door' dealerhip visit...with no luck and finally gave up. Five years later...the rattle, on one road trip, turned into a very audible sound of metal on metal ..to the point that you had to raise your voice in the cab. The result... it appears one of the fasteners for the spare wheel bracket..was lock tighted...but never screwed right home... it came loose..and finally sent a spider web of cracks through the skin. Jeep met me half way with the costs..but it was something I learnt from. I'll be getting a wheel carrier on mine ..that's swung from the rear bar. As you say...just keep an eye on it.

I know this is about highlift jacks, and that they
are usefull for more than jacking up your car.

But,

I've just recieved a catalogue from quadratech and found a new product that wold suit you JK guys.

It's a moulded "base plate" for your original jack, they state that it will lift your car high enough with up to 33" tyres. The big plus is that it is designed to fit into the underfloor cargo area in the back of a JK.

Thought it was pretty cool.

Sorts out the storage problems and good enough to change a tyre.

found the link, up to 35" tyre..

...I've no doubt mine was close to a 'worst case scenario' ..but while it's common practice to have your spare fitted to the rear door, it does put a lot more load on a portion of the vehicle that really isn't a 'load bearer'. In your photos..you've fitted the weight closer to the vehicle rather than out from it...and that alone is a good thing I feel. You probably won't have a problem...but if you decide to go with an aftermarket rear bar later...maybe consider incorporating a swing away tyre carrier and Hi-Lift mount and then the weight is taken by the chassis..which has a lot more in reserve than the tail gate door and its hinges.

Jap stuff have poor hinges, look at the amount of TJs getting around with bigger tyres on the back.
