I would recommend Dell too, for $1500 you can spec up what you want and down where it's not needed. My current lappy is a Dell which I got for about $1500 a year ago. They will always have some sort of deal on - just look for one that gives you what you're after - I got a free screen quality upgrade, and spare 6-cell battery.

Mac's are great, but you're definitely looking at a higher price point. I'd avoid Sony personally, not that they're bad, but Sony tend to like their proprietary stuff which if you have any problems down the track could get expensive.

EGADS.... How can people use Dell then suggest it??? You people make me sick! But seriously, I think Dell's are as good a computer and company the same way I regard the Hummer H3 as being the ultimate offroad weapon.

Macs are great, love em and use them. An entry level macbook will serve your purpose fine and you can get the best price on them by going to the apple store site and choosing "education" from the left hand navigation as she's a student. Alternatively you can click this link http://store.apple.com/Catalog/Austr...utingpage.html

Sony's aren't bad they're just overpriced and I have moral objections to their company (due to them putting spyware on their cd's)

I haven't bought a Toshiba for a couple of years but I've always in the past used them and found them to be good - They just manage to always be a few kilos heavier than every other laptop around!

I agree except ASUS, in recent years they have improved, they have always had great MOBOs.
