After reading more of the rules,

Seeing that a metal roof is required, seems a TJ is out. (unless you want to fab one)

I reckon an XJ on 3" lift and 29" simex, 4.56 ratios and detroits. With plenty of underbody protection and a decent winch, would be very competative.

4.0l of grunt, ample flex, extra wheelbase over a TJ. You can cut the guards for heaps of up travel... hmmmmm. be a cheap way to do some comps and kick some pootrol ass...

Sorry arnt most simex (well im taking a stab and guessing your talking about the extreme treckers) bias tyres?? pretty you will need a radial tyre to compete with laws against newer cars with bias tyres..

correct me if thats wrong..

Just an example, whatever brand would do, as long as it measured up as big as the rules alowed and was aggressive enough.

What about MT Claws (radial) with the lateral blocks cut to make it bite better off camber? (nothing about cutting tyres) (yet)......

That's the thinking I was hoping for...

even on 30s or so a jeep would still be extremely competitive in this class I think... remember the huge weight advantage with winching... I have a 6hp hi-mount (allowed under the rules) and with 12V it pulls my jeep very nicely up winch hills however when I have winched my mates patrols with it (remember by MMM rules this is the fastest winch you can have) when loaded up the speed would have halved to say the least!! Towing a ton less up a hill is going to be a huge advantage...

I'm sure a steel roof can be very quickly fabbed up to suit the required cage... my personal opinion is that I would do this mod anyway... I run a 3mm Alloy sheet on my cage which passed local comp rules but this would have to be checked with MMM.

Everyone on Outers is moaning about it being a patrol comp too... but I just refuse to believe that anything but a jeep is best suited to this comp!!!

I'm trying to convince my patrol owning brother that he should sell it and by a TJ which we will build to suit these rules... I reckon it will be a fun event that takes the $$$ out and the best team back in...

I'll be watching this closely....

My rigs to modded to suit, but I'd love to compete on a driver/navi/car skill basis. Rather than who has the biggest budget.

I reckon an XJ would be perfect..
Could be a daily driver/club car too. Just swap the 30's for some 33's to compete.

I think everyones getting slightly too hung up on little details... I think metcalf will definately let the simex's through as he is also letting custom barwork and whatnot through.
Which wouldn't be stricktly road legal.
I think that he is setting a maximum tire size at 840mm.

I still think a TJ on 31s and locks would perform as well as a patrol on 33s and locks... The diff clearance is still better and if it is a winch challenge like MMM tends to push towards the hills would be undrivable for both so try to keep the wrangler as lights as possible and use your Nav and winch speed to your best advantage...

Also remember that most of these people competing will now be in long wheel base utes or short wheel base wagons... Jeeps have another advantage of being manoverable so in the tight stuff the jeep will fit where it will slow the bigger patrols down... especially if people are entering their street cars and don't want to do damage... think about how many times you drag your back half of the cage along trees... who cares... well the patrol wagon boys will... all speeding up your chances of the win...

I'm keen... sort of wish this was around before I put hydro bumps and stuff in my TJ that right it off for this event...
maybe the wife will let me sell here car and buy her a TJ!!!
he he
