Like to get back to the original question if possible. I have opened up the hardtop, and I think the idea should be possible. I need to get some more pieces to prove it. There is a 24mm deep and 100mm wide channel the whole way from front to back without any obstructions, so sliding an aluminium strip down inside the channel should work. Only issue I have to deal with is that the existing holes are closer than I would have liked to the edge of the channel. Should know in a few days.

Had the same dilemma myself.

I went to Jaram roofracks in Welshpool, Had an 1800 x 1200 Tracklander fitted to the hard top.

I have had struts made for the back to bear the mass from the bolts securing the roofrack down to the bolts holding the hard top on.

Above the back doors there is a custom made 'Z' bracket to transfer the load onto the rollcage. Works a treat!

I regularly carry over 100kg on the roof. Cost $2200. Rear airbags assist with stability.

Did a week long trip through Albany, Esperance, Isrealite, Balladonia,Noresman, Hyden, Perth. 2800km in 8 days! Epic adventure!

Don't mean to jack your thread but have you ever looked at the MBRP rack...has a dynamic load rating of 350lbs+, a static of 1000+lbs. and they come with internal brackets that transfer the load to the tub instead of the top, shipping from Canada may cost a bit though...

here's a couple pics of mine and a link to their website...

thats probably the best one i've seen yet. doesn't impact on using snorkels or windshield mounted spotties. also has a nice low profile.

too bad the only place its available is from requires it to be shipped from the other side of the planet

for me thats not such a problem. I'd be using the hardtop when doing epic touring (the only reason i'd need it for) for its dust protection and extra security or all our gear.
