Mine does this probally once a fortnight, it's the NSS almost for shure. Drop it into neutral and try and start it, if that doesn't work i can't help anymore.
I have exactly the same symptoms as yours is presenting though and it always starts first try in neutral.
Will get around to cleaning the NSS when i have alittle time but is there any damage that can be done leaving the NSS not working properly for extended periods of time?

Agree with junglejuice ... most likely the NSS.

Plenty of how to dos on gojeeps site / Greatlakes / Jeepforum / naxja or most of the others. Worth reading them all as each has titbits the others neglect.

Check the firewall plug connection first .... and take care levering the NSS off the shaft.
Mine was the NSS. the "grease"had turned to hard wax!

i used lanoline as a replacement "grease" as i didn't want it hardening again.

Its the starer motor I reckon. Hit it with a hammer and she'll start. Mine does it every now and then. Sounds like crap advice but mine was dead. No click. Nothing. Lights work fine. Like the motor had seized. Hammer. Once. Not a case breaking crack but a solid thump will do it.

You state that there are no warning lights on when selecting start but what about with the ignition in the ON position? Do you get any lights then?
