Yes Indie, the drawers need to be high enough to clear the plastic sill. I have tried to create as much open storage space as possible by using the side pod cubicles on each side of the drawers (where the structure of the KJ would not allow a drawer to slide out), and in the storage cubicle in the back section that goes up against the seatback. The goal was not to reduce the total volume of the back area, but to divide it, slide it, and provide containment and storage for the recovery gear, and anything else we need to carry. The side pods are ideal for small tents, popup toilet cubicles, tarps, ropes, and I can even get my bottle jack into them. BTW that area under the drawers was left open (40mm) so it too can be used for storage (the sill precludes some access) probably suitable for things like flexible plastic cutting boards, maps or guide books, etc.

More pics to come this week.

A couple of small tarps or ground sheets etc would suit the space after the drawers. You've inspired me to think about the rear of my KJ.

Do the screws from the draw runners poke through to the side bins and into the drawers?

To solve this and prevent torn hands and bloodstains you might want to try pop rivets from the sides through to the runners.
Other than that it looks like a well thought out unit, lightweight ply reinforced with epoxy should hold together well.

The screws (stainless steel) do poke through the one two of the side pieces (but these tips have since been removed with my angle grinder). I used 6mm ply for the two side pieces in question (the others are 12mm), and did not have any shorter screws at the time. It's all smooth now and painted over (as you will see in the coming photos.

Here are the updated photos I promised. Just a few little things to finish off: paint the drawer faces, install the handles, put in a centre trim piece between the drawers, and install the tie downs on top of the deck. Notice the stainless steel tie down points for the unit, the two on the side panels attach to the existing rear tie downs in the KJ, the other two are hidden inside the slanted cubby and attach to the front tie downs on the KJ (attach with cam lock straps or small turnbuckles).
