No duties on Car parts from the US any more thanks to the free trade agreement, need to get a statement from your supplier that the parts were sourced from the US and then you only have GST.

Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement

AUTOMOTIVE

  • Australia and the United States agreed to eliminate customs duties on almost all automotive products from the day the agreement entered into force.
  • The United States’ 2.5 per cent duty on passenger motor vehicles, the 25 per cent tariff on light commercial vehicles and tariffs on auto parts and accessories exports were immediately eliminated.
  • Australian duties on passenger motor vehicles will be phased, to zero in 2010.
Summary

The United States agreed to remove, from day one, all tariffs on automotive products. For most automotive products, US tariffs were generally low. Australian tariffs on finished passenger motor vehicles are being phased out by 2010.
Australia's tariffs on all other automotive goods, in particular car parts and commercial vehicles, were eliminated from day one of the Agreement.
Gains for Australia

The United States is the largest market in the world for autos and auto parts. The AUSFTA assists with the integration of Australian manufacturers into the US market. Though US tariffs on automotive parts are relatively low, their removal will provide Australian manufacturers with an edge against competitors from other US import markets in an industry where margins are slim.

Does this mean you will soon be importing Jeep parts?

From the site:
Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA) entered into force on 1 January 2005.

The big thing is you have to ask about it and make sure you have the forms with the country of origin and a letter/e-mail from the supplier stating that yes, blah, blah, blah the stuff is from us here in America.

The free trade stuff doesn't save you from 10% GST though and that's payable on the item and freight over $1000.

I will be importing all the bits for mine, thru my mustang business. You need to pay GST on anything you bring in, over $1000 au, plus duty of 5-10% on stuff not manufactured in the US, so a set of lights made in Mexico, attract duty, a US made set of lights don't.
I average it out that I pay 15% GST/duty, and cover myself ok on my stock orders.

I have actually lined up some billet accessory gear for TJ/JK and H2/H3 Hummer, thinking of setting up a webpage and eBay store.

I ordered all my gear from the states (yet to find the opportunnity to put it on however) and i did get myself the xhd modular bumper, and i tell you what, it's pretty heavy, and solid. But from my calculations it was still cheaper than ordering the products in Australia, i'd like to support local retailers but i dont have the pocket to do so.

Made my orders through quadratec, no troubles whatsoever. although sometimes their salesservice can be a bit lacking.

just worked it all out today after getting my shipping quote back (finally) for 5 x BFG KM2's 35's x 12.5 x 17 with 5 x KMC Venom rims

from 1st Jan 2010 some Custom's duty rates dropped to 5%

you need to pay:
5% Custom's duty on the value
+Shipping & Insurance

THEN: 10% GST on the lot

= not worthwhile, for tyres+rims anyway
